Back to Brown...

Another visit back to one of my favorite spots, the Distillery District. This time the purpose was to practice using my camera with manual settings rather then the automatic ones I have been using up to this point. In a way I feel I am starting all over, but yet it feels exciting and new all at once. Most people who know me, know I have the patience of....well...who am I kidding. I have no patience. Which actually amazes me how much I love trying to figure out, and capture a good shot. Of course there are those moments of pure frustration, and disappointment but that comes with anything being newly learned.

But I digress. This shot is part of Toronto's most photographed old trucks at the Distillery. I can see why, the patina on it is simply amazing. My goal is of course to try and capture a less popular view of it. I love the rusty reds, and brown tones. Reminds one that Fall is only a month away....

Petals

There are a few days where I feel I need to take my camera with me even though I have no intention of taking photos. This shot was on one of those days. I was doing errands and came across this rusted metal and wood flower in someones front garden. I really liked the colours which remind me of mother-of-pearl, yet it is my typical interest of rust, and weathered wood.

You just never know what you are going to see....

Alarm

Went for a walk on Queen Street West yesterday, and came across this rusted alarm. Despite the fact it is a rusty brown, I liked how it worked with the colours that had been painted on the wall. It kind of popped, without being typical 'pop' colours. Earthy, without being natural. Picturesque, I guess you could say.

Super Cycle

It is rare that I venture outside without my camera. Two years ago my 'subject' was primarily architecture, and architectural details. I still love those things, but slowly my eyes have opened to a wide variety of things that make me stop and rethink them. Simple everyday things like a super cycle can make me pause within a crowded sidewalk. First I see, then in my brain I compose, or frame a shot, then grab the camera and click. I'm sure when I suddenly get on my hands and knees and take photos of certain items like a super cycle, people must really think it strange. This particular shot appeals to me because of the colour, the shapes, and there is for sure a sense of nostalgia.......

Vintage

One of my favorite places to take photos is the Distillery District at the bottom of Parliament street. There is a great sense of times past, yet the art galleries, and interiors in some of the shops keep the place current. The unfortunate thing about this area is that the sense of nostalgia has been sharply cut by the massive condo tower in the midst of it all. But don't get me started on that....

The area is rich with patina. There is plenty of textures in the brickwork, peeling paint, weathered wood, and rusting shutter hooks. For someone like me who loves the textures and patterns time creates, it is a photographers Heaven. If you follow this blog, I am positive you will see many photos taken in this great place.
